Arrival

School beins at 9:00 each morning. Breakfast is served beginning at 8:35. No students should arrive at school until 8:30. There is not adult supervision and it is unsafe to leave students unattended on the playground prior to 8:30. Students may be dropped off in the circle drive in front of the building and can walk to the playground door for entrance in the mornings. Due to safety concerns no student should be dropped off in the back parking lot.

Dismissal

Students are dismissed from school at 4:00 (2:00 on Wednesdays). Request for dismissal prior to the end of the day is disruptive to student learning so no student should be dismissed from school early.

All Car Riders will be dismissed along Splitlog, all Walkers are dismissed from the playground and all buses are loaded in the circle drive.

The narrow streets and 600+ students can make for a dangerous combination. Please support safety by crossing at cross walks, obeying traffic laws and not blocking traffic where you parak. No cars will be permitted to park along the West side of 11th Street in front of the school building.

Attendance

Student attendance at school is essential for their success! Please schedule all appointments and vacations so they do not interfere with your child's school day. If your child will be absent please call the school before 9:30 to report the absence. If your child has three consecutive unexcused absences or five or more unexcused absences in one semester a truant officer will be notified and a report will be filed with the District Attorney's Office.

Absences will be excused for the following reasons:

  1. Illness of the student
  2. Death in the family
  3. Absence prearranged by the parent and approved by the principal.
  4. Other emergency approved by the principal

Health Information

The school nurse works very hard to keep kids safe and healthy at school. If your child is sick, or has any unique health-related concerns please contact her so she can be aware of the issue.

No school personnel can administer any medication to a student without a prescription from a physician. If your child needs meds administered during the school day please contact the nurse as soon as possible. Children MAY NOT take meds on their own.  Any medications sent to school must be kept in the nurse’s office.

If your child has a fever or is vomiting please call the school and keep your child home until he/she is FEVER FREE FOR 24 HOURS.

Lice can be a problem for students at school. However, the solution rests in the home. All students with lice will be sent home immediately and may not return to school until the nurse determines that they are nit free.

Parent Contact Information

It is EXTREMELY important that the school have several emergency contact phone numbers for each student. If your phone number or address changes during the school year please contact the office immediately to inform them of the changes. There have been many instances when an emergency arises and we are unable to contact parents. Please don’t let this happen to your child.

Communication

At M. E. Pearson we do our best at keeping parents informed of what is happening at school. Classroom newsletters are sent home weekly, Tiger Tales, the school’s newsletter, is published monthly, and special announcements are occasionally sent home with your child, usually on bright paper. If you have any questions or need assistance you can contact the office by phone or in person anytime between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

Your child’s teachers are busy teaching all day. If you need to speak with them please call the office and leave a message with the secretary. The teacher will return your call before or after school or during their plan period within 24 hours. If you need to speak with the nurse, the Principal or Asst. Principal please call the office and they will return your call as soon as possible.

Discipline

Student safety is our most pressing concern. Every student has the right to come to school feeling safe and secure, without fear of bullying. The teachers and administrators do their best to maintain a positive and safe learning environment for every child. They employ classroom management and teaching techniques that reinforce positive behaviors. Parents, teachers, administrators and students must all work together to ensure that all students follow the Student Code of Conduct at all times.

Homework

Homework is a tool teachers use to help students practice the skills they learn in class and to help them develop good study habits that will follow them through their academic career. Each teacher has their own homework policy, which will be communicated to parents during Open House and FAS Conferences. Please help reinforce this very important part of schooling by ensuring your child has a quiet space and time set aside every night to read and complete their homework.

Building Security

To help keep all students safe and secure at school the following steps have been taken:

  1. All visitors must check in at the front office before they enter the building.
  2. The playground gate will be locked at 9:00 AM.
  3. No student will be released to an adult who is not listed on the enrollment papers.

Classroom Parties

Classroom parties are held at the discretion of the teacher. If you wish to bring in treats for your child’s birthday you must contact the teacher in advance to arrange a time. Any food brought into the school must be prepared commercially and be convenient to serve.

Emergency Dismissal/Cancellations

Every effort is made to maintain the regular schedules. However, if severe weather or other emergencies occur and early dismissals or school cancellations are necessary all local TV and radio news channels will make an announcement that USD 500 Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools will be closed.

Recess

All students will have at least one outdoor recess each day unless it is raining or the temperature drops below 32° Fahrenheit. During cold weather students MUST wear clothing appropriate for the temperature.

Family Advocacy (FAS)

Family Advocacy is a way to strengthen the connections between students, parents and the schools. This year there will be three FAS Conference times – August, November and February.  FAS Conferences are designed to solicit information from parents and students so that teachers can better meet their unique needs. All parents should attend all three FAS Conferences.  In addition to these days, a parent can contact their student’s teacher at any time to schedule an additional conference if needed.

Read With Your Child

Reading is the most important skill your child will learn. At school we do our best to teach your child to read, but the time we have at school is not sufficient. To help your student become a successful student you should encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every day. Reading WITH your child will show him/her how important reading is and how much fun it can be …

Student Code of Conduct

Every student is provided with one copy of the Code of Conduct, which serves as the Board of Education’s expectations for student responsibilities and behavior. If you have questions about the Code of Contact please contact your child’s teacher or the Principal.

The following is a very brief list of the expectations:

  1. Honesty – Be a person who can be counted on …
  2. Respectful Behavior – Treat each person as you should be treated …
  3. Responsibility – Do the right thing …
  4. Compassion – Be kind to others …
  5. Self Discipline – Take charge of yourself …
  6. Perseverance – Stick to it …
  7. Giving – Share your time and talents …
